Honeysett leads
Hens past New Hampshire, 3-1
NEWARK, DE -- Mike Honeysett
(Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) scored a pair of
second half goals to lead the University of Delaware past
New Hampshire in men's soccer at the Mini-Stadium on Sunday.
The win puts Delaware (7-9-1, 4-4-1) two points ahead of New
Hampshire for sixth place in America East.
After falling behind, 1-0, on a Josh
Herold goal, the Blue Hens tied the game late in the first
half. Kyle Shilcock-Elliott netted his second goal of
the season after the Wildcat goalie mishandled an Adam
Flanigan cross.
Delaware took control of the game in the
63rd minute after New Hampshire's (5-7-3, 3-4-2) Nicholas
Mello was red-carded, leaving the Wildcats a player short
for the rest of the game.
The Hens took advantage of the extra
player as Honeysett gave the Blue Hens the lead seconds
later, drilling a shot from to the top right corner of the
net from 20 yards out. Honeysett would add his second goal
10 minutes later, chipping in a rebound after Tyler Jackson
recorded a defensive save on his initial shot.
Kyle Haynes stopped six shots in
the net for Delaware.
Sunday was the University of Delaware's
final home game of the season. It finishes with a four-game
home winning streak and a 6-2 record at the Mini-Stadium
this season.
With the playoffs within reach, he Blue
Hens close out the 2001 season next weekend against the
conference elite, playing at Boston University on Friday and
at Northeastern on Sunday. The top six teams will make it to
the America East Championship this season.
