Blue Hens fall 4-3
at Hofstra in CAA debut
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Shaun Higgins scored
once and dished out two assists to lead No. 18 Hofstra to a
4-3 victory over Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association
men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Hens jumped out to an early 1-0
lead when Ryan Edwards collected a pass from J.D.
Van Acker, and slipped a hot shot over onrushing Hofstra
goalkeeper D.J. Greening just 6:30 into the
match.
The Pride would score the games next two
goals and led at the half, 2-1.
Adam Flanigan tied the score just
3:25 into the second stanza when he knocked in a 15-yard
shot off a lateral pass from Jeff Martell.
Just 1:18 later, the Blue Hens took their
second lead of the game on a Hofstra own goal when a Pride
defender tried to clear the ball from in front of the net,
but instead deflected it backwards into the net.
However, the lead was short lived as
Jochen Strobel answered with his second goal of the match
just 1:08 later to square the match, 3-3.
Higgins scored the game's deciding goal
at 75:55 to hand Delaware their first conference loss as a
member of the CAA.
Kyle Haynes had a season high nine
saves in a losing effort for the Blue Hens. Greening had
four saves for Hofstra (8-2-1, 1-1 CAA).
The Blue Hens (2-6-2, 0-1 CAA) return to
action Tuesday when they visit conference rival Drexel. Game
time is set for 3 p.m.
