Three Freshmen
Tally the First Points of their Career to Send Delaware to
its Second Victory of the Season
NEWARK, DE -- Freshmen George
Severini (Havertown, PA/Haverford) and John Leonard
(Monkton, MD/St. Paul's) notched their first collegiate
goals to lead the University of Delaware men's soccer team
over Rider University, 2-0 on Wednesday night at the
Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Severini scored in the eighth minute of
play, tapping in his own rebound from five yards out, to
open the scoring.
The game was scoreless for the next 77
minutes until Leonard scored just 11 seconds after entering
the match for the first time. Leonard was set up by fellow
freshman Matt Haney (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth's) for
his first career point as a Blue Hen.
Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's, MD/St.
Michael's) posted his second consecutive shutout and the
ninth of his career. Haynes made three saves on the
evening.
Delaware (2-1-1) held the offensive edge,
outshooting Rider (0-5) 12-7.
The Blue Hens return to action on
Saturday, September 13 as they travel to Mt. St. Mary's for
a 2 p.m. match.
