October 3, 2002 RICHMOND, VA -- Virginia Commonwealth's Matthew Delicate scored two goals and one assist to send the University of Delaware men's soccer team to a 3-1 loss in its opening match of Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday night in Richmond, VA. The Rams commanded a 2-0 lead within the first twenty minutes of the contest.off goals by Matthew Delicate and Stephen Shirley. The Blue Hens responded in the early going of the second half as redshirt freshman Greg Minnis (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) registered his first collegiate points to tighten the score to 2-1 at 66:56. Virginia Commonwealth iced the game less than twenty minutes as Delicate scored his second goal of the contest at 84:00. In goal, junior co-captain Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's, MD/St. Michael's) made five saves for the Blue Hens. The Rams (6-3, 1-0 CAA) outshot the Blue Hens 17-3 while both teams were an even 3-3 in corner kicks. Delaware (3-5-2, 0-1 CAA) continues its CAA schedule on Sunday, October 5, as it travels to UNC Wilmington for a 2 p.m. contest.
