Defeats #24 Central Connecticut State,
2-1
NEWARK, DE
(September 8, 2004)-- The University of
Delaware men's soccer team used a strong
second half to defeat #24 Central
Connecticut State, 2-1 on Wednesday night
at Delaware Mini-Stadium. The win is the
first of the year for the Blue Hens (1-3)
and marks the first time, Delaware has
ever defeated a nationally ranked
team.
The Blue
Hens wasted little time in this one, as
just 13:20 into the game, senior Richard
Zeller (Narberth, PA/ Haverford -at right)
scored off a free kick for the early lead.
Zeller's goal was unassisted and is his
second goal of the year. Central
Connecticut State scored the equalizer,
approximately 26 minutes later as Alex
Harrison was awarded a penalty kick and
was successful. The two teams matched each
other shot for shot in the first
half.
Delaware's
J.D. VanAcker (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee)
scored from 25 yards out, on a ball to the
left corner of the net, just seven minutes
into the second half and the Blue Hens had
their lead back. The goal was VanAcker's
first of the season. Central Connecticut
State had an opportunity slip through its
hands with 11 minutes and some change to
go in the game. Andrew Cooper had a header
in on net, but Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's
MD/ St. Michael's) turned the ball away to
preserve the lead.
For the
game, Haynes made three saves, to Andrew
Sierman's three for the Blue
Devils.
Delaware
will return to action a week from today on
Wednesday, September 15th. The Blue Hens
will play host to Mt. St. Mary's at 7:00
p.m.
