McKnight's
Goal Give George Mason 3-2 Double Overtime
Win Over Delaware
FAIRFAX,
VA (October 1, 2004)-- Teba McKnight took
a feed from Steve Alabi and scored from
the near corner of the box 3:23 into the
second overtime period to give the George
Mason men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over
Delaware Friday night.
The
Patriots, who improved to 5-3-1 overall
and 1-0 in the Colonial Athletic
Association, struck first 27:35 into the
match when McKnight scored off a rebound
from five yards out.
Mason
extended its lead to 2-0 at the 41:54 mark
when Anthony Noreiga scored off a corner
kick from Danny Climo, and the Patriots
took a two-goal lead into the
half.
Delaware
freshman forward Sobhan Tajalli
(Hockessin, DE/A.I. duPont) pulled the
Blue Hens within one just 6:46 into the
second half by scoring off an assist from
fellow rookie TC Young (Pittsburgh,
PA/Central Catholic), and Tadjalli tied
the match by converting a penalty kick
with just 8:53 remaining.
Delaware,
which fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the
conference, kept the momentum through the
first overtime period, recording the only
three shots of the frame. However the Blue
Hens could not find the back of the net,
and McKnight scored his fifth goal of the
year in double overtime to win it for the
Patriots.
Tadjall,
who has now scored eight of Delaware's 17
goals this year, is just two goals shy of
the school single-season freshman record
of 10 held by John McCloskey during the
1975 season.
Blue Hen
senior goalkeeper Kyle Haynes (St.
Michael's, MD/St. Michael's) made three
saves for Delaware, while George Mason
keeper John O'Hara stopped four shots.
Each team recorded 18 shots, while the
Blue Hens held an 8-5 edge in penalty
corners.
Delaware
returns to action Sunday when the Blue
Hens travel to James Madison for a 2 p.m.
match with the Dukes.
