Uses Four Goals from Tadjalli to Defeat
Mt. St. Mary's, 7-2
 NEWARK,
DE (September 15, 2004)-- The University
of Delaware men's soccer team used a big
scoring punch to defeat Mt. St. Mary's,
7-2 on a rainy Wednesday night at Delaware
Mini-Stadium. The win is the second
straight for the Blue Hens (2-3), with
both wins coming on their home
turf.
The
scoring started early in this one, as Mt.
St. Mary's (0-4-1) Steven Cant beat the
defenders and took the ball from 20 yards
out for the goal, just eight minutes into
the game. This was the first time all
season Delaware has not scored the first
goal of the game.
The lead
would not last as freshman sensation
Sobhan Tadjalli (Hockessin, DE/ A.I.
DuPont at right) took a pass from Justin
Arpan (Downingtown, PA/ Downingtown) and
dribbled in past the goalie to tie the
match 19 minutes into the action. About
six minutes later, senior Adam Flanigan
(Newark, DE/ St. Mark's) took one in and
scored to give the Blue Hens the lead for
good. Less than a minute later, Tadjalli
notched his second goal of the game, this
time off a pass from Anthony Molinaro
(Manasquan, NJ/ St. Benedict's) in the
midfield, and Delaware took a 3-1 lead
into the half despite being out-shot in
the period, 8-7.
Just 20
minutes into the second half, Tadjalli
picked up the first hat trick of his
career on a breakaway after taking a pass
from J.D. VanAcker (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee).
Tadjalli finished his night with a fourth
goal six minutes later, scoring from 5
yards out. Sal Tadjalli (Hockessin, DE/
C.W. Baker) followed his brother's lead by
scoring his first goal of the year off a
pass from T.C. Young (Pittsburgh, PA/
Central Catholic). Mt. St. Mary's scored
its second goal of the contest with six
minutes to go, as Macques Thomas found the
back of the net. Delaware capped off its
scoring barrage when Drew Majerick
(Pittsburgh, PA/ Fox Chapel Area) took an
Adam Smith (Wilmington, DE/ St. Mark's)
pass and beat the goalie.
The Blue
Hens' Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's MD/ St.
Michael's) logged 81 minutes in net,
allowing one goal and making four saves.
Josh Sand (Wenonah, NJ/ Gateway Regional),
seeing his first action as a Blue Hen,
also allowed one goal in nine minutes of
action. Mt. St. Mary's received two saves
from Derek Clouser in net.
The seven
goals scored by Delaware are tied for the
second most in a match in school history.
The Blue Hens defeated St. Joseph's, 8-2,
in 1965 and have now scored seven goals
four times. The last time Delaware scored
seven was on October 29, 1975, when the
Blue Hens defeated Villanova,
7-2.
Tadjalli
is the third player in UD history to score
four goals in a match, as Mike Biggs in
1968 and Jeff McBrearty in 1972 also
scored four times. Jesus "Gee" Fernandez
holds the school record by scoring five
goals in a 6-1 win over West Chester in
1943.
Delaware
will return to action this weekend when
the Blue Hens travel to Monmouth
University. Game time on Saturday is set
for 2 p.m.
