 Haney's
Goal Gives Delaware the 1-0 Win over Navy
in 2OT
NEWARK, DE
(September 21, 2004)-- Sophomore Matt
Haney (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth) connected
with 6:53 remaining in the second overtime
as Delaware claimed a 1-0 victory over
Navy in double overtime Tuesday night. The
win pulls the Blue Hens (3-4) to within a
game of .500 and is senior Kyle Haynes'
(St. Michael's, MD/ St. Michael's-at
right) first shutout of the
year.
Both teams
struggled out of the gate, as much of the
action took place at midfield. Delaware
had its best chance of the first half when
Anthony Pezza (Jackson, NJ/ St.
Benedict's) stroked one just wide of the
goal mouth. Delaware out-shot the
Midshipmen 3-2 in the first
half.
The Blue
Hens controlled the action in the second
half as they out shot Navy, 9-3, but
neither team was able to connect for a
goal.
Neither
team was able to get anything going as
overtime started until Delaware was
awarded a free kick off a foul and current
Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of
the Week Sobhan Tadjalli (Hockessin, DE/
A.I. duPont) found Haney for the goal
Haynes
recorded three saves on the way to the
shutout while Frank DiFilippo made three
saves for the Midshipmen before allowing
the goal. For the game, Delaware out-shot
Navy, 12-6.
The Blue
Hens take to the road for four straight
matches, beginning on Tuesday September
28th, when they travel to Rider. Game time
is set for 4 p.m.
