Falls to No. 28 New Mexico 3-2 at VCU
Tournament
RICHMOND,
VA (September 3, 2004)-- Jeff Rowland's
hat trick was all No. 28 ranked New Mexico
needed as it defeated the University of
Delaware men's soccer team by a 3-2 score
on Friday night in the first round of the
Virginia Commonwealth
Tournament.
The Blue
Hens (0-2) took the lead early in this one
as, freshman Sobhan Tadjalli (Hockessin,
DE/ A.I. DuPont)put a shot just inside the
left post at the 6:48 mark. Tadjalli's
goal, the first of his college career and
was assisted by Tau Blau (Staten Island,
NY/ Susan Wagner) and Richard Zeller
(Narberth, PA/ Haverford - at
right).
Delaware
was not done yet as one minute later the
Hens struck again, this time for a team-
credited goal and the 2-0 lead. New Mexico
would tally one of their own in the first
half as Rowland found the net off a pass
from Hans Bevers.
The second
half was Rowland's show as he placed one
inside the left post for his second of the
game, this time from Ben Ashwill with 32
minutes showing on the clock. A little
less than 10 minutes later, Rowland was
awarded a penalty kick and stroked it home
to complete the hat trick and give the
Lobos the win.
Delaware
senior Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's MD/ St.
Michael's) made seven saves in goal while
New Mexico's Andrew Weber was forced to
make two. New Mexico out shot the Blue
Hens by a 25-5 margin.
Delaware
returns to action on Sunday when the Blue
Hens will take on LaSalle at 3:30 pm as
their second game in the Virginia
Commonwealth Tournament.
