Falls to Old Dominion 3-2 in Double
Overtime
NEWARK, DE
(October 16, 2004) --Old Dominion's Edson
Elcock scored in the 103rd minute as the
Monarchs picked up a 3-2 Colonial Athletic
Association double overtime men's socccer
win over the University of Delaware (
3-9-1, 0-5 CAA) on a cold, wet night at
Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Blue
Hens had a few early chances in this one
as several shots sailed just wide or over
the top of the net. Old Dominion also had
several chances in the first half, but
neither team was able to capitalize. The
shots were even in the first half at
8-8.
Old
Dominion found the back of the net first
as Elcock took a cross from Kevin
McMenamin in the 53rd minute and scored.
Kyle Hartley gave the Monarchs a two-goal
lead in the 65th minute by beating a Blue
Hen defender for a goal.
The Blue
Hens climbed back into the match when
freshman Sobhan Tadjalli (Hockessin, DE/
A.I. duPont-at right) was awarded a
penalty kick in the 77th minute and
connnected to bring Delaware within 2-1.
Tadjalli
struck again in the 90th minute as he took
a ball down the left side and snuck it
just inside the right post to knot the
game at 2-2 and send the match into
overtime. Tadjalli's second goal was his
10th of the season and ties a school
record for goals in a season by a freshman
set in 1975 by John McCloskey.
The game
remained knotted at 2-2 until Elcock
struck for his second goal of the night in
the 103rd minute.
Kyle
Haynes (St. Michael's, MD/ St. Michael's)
had a busy night in goal as he made seven
saves for the Blue Hens while John
Connelly made two saves in net for Old
Dominion. Old Dominion outshot the Blue
Hens 15-13 for the match.
The Blue
Hens return to action on Friday, October
22 when they travel to Hofstra for a 7
p.m. game with the Pride.
