(October 31, 2004)-- UNC Wilmington's
Russell Bienias scored just 19 minutes
into the match and the Seahawks held on
for the 3-0 win over the University of
Delaware men's soccer team on Sunday
afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association
action. The loss was the third straight
for the Blue Hens (4-12-1, 1-8 CAA) and
was their final home game of the 2004
season.
Before the
game, the team honored seniors Adam
Flanigan (Newark, DE/ St. Mark's), Richard
Zeller ( Narberth, PA/ Haverford), and
Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's, MD/ St.
Michael's-at right).
Bienias'
goal came off the rebound from a Keith
Shevlin shot and gave UNC Wilmington
(11-5-1, 5-3 CAA) the early lead. The goal
was Bienias' team leading sixth goal of
the year.
The Blue
Hens had an opportunity in the first half
as Adam Smith (Wilmington, DE/ St. Mark's)
had a shot sail just wide of the
net.
The
Seahawks put their second goal of the game
on the board, 17 minutes into the second
half as Chris Murray took a pass from
Columb Grant and fired the ball into the
back of the net from 10 yards
out.
Sam Leger
tallied the final goal of the game in the
74th minute, as it was again Shevlin with
the helper.
Sobhan
Tadjalli (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. duPont) had
two good shots in the second half, as one
sailed over the top of the net and
Seahawks goalie Brad Knighton was just
able to corral the second ball.
Haynes
made seven saves in the game for the Blue
Hens. The seven saves allow Haynes to move
into third place on the Delaware career
saves list with 346. Knighton registered
five saves in net for the Seahawks. UNC
Wilmington finished the game, outshooting
the Blue Hens, 14-9.
The Blue
Hens conclude their 2004 season as they
travel to West Virginia on November 2,
game time is at 7 p.m.
