Falls to #23 VCU, 2-1
NEWARK, DE
(October 29, 2004)-- An early goal by
senior Adam Flanigan (Newark, DE/ St.
Mark's-at right) was just not enough as
No. 23 Virginia Commonwealth scored two
unanswered first-half goals and held on to
beat the University of Delaware men's
soccer team, 2-1, on Friday night in
Colonial Athletic Association action at
Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The loss
was the second straight for the Blue Hens,
who fell to 4-11-1 overall and 1-7 in the
CAA.
Delaware
got things rolling early in this one as
Flanigan took a pass from freshman Sobhan
Tadjalli (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. duPont) and
connected from 15 yards out just 4:30 into
the match. The goal was Flanigan's third
of the season and ties him for second on
the team in that category. Tadjalli's
helper was his third of the season as he
now leads the team with 11 goals and is
tied for the team lead with three
assists.
The Rams
(10-4-1, 6-1 CAA) struck for the equalizer
at 19:23 as Brian Morris took a Simon
Toselli pass and beat the defender for the
goal.
Virginia
Commonwealth would put the go ahead goal
on the board with just 3:30 to go until
the half, as Mike Aust tucked a ball in
the left corner of the net.
The second
half was an evenly played battle as both
teams had their chances, but neither could
convert.
Senior
Kyle Haynes (St. Michael's, MD/ St.
Michael's) had a busy night in goal,
making eight saves in net for the Blue
Hens including some big ones down the
stretch to keep Delaware within striking
distance. Haynes now needs just four saves
to reach third place on the career saves
list at Delaware. Saul Montero made one
save in goal for the Rams, who finished
the game outshooting Delaware,
14-7.
The Blue
Hens return to action on Sunday, October
31 when they host UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m.
Prior to the game the team will honor its
three seniors for Senior Day.
