Villanova, PA-- Villanova University freshman forward Joe Taylor scored with
only 31 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Villanova University men’s
soccer team over the University of Delaware, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in the
season opener for both teams.
In the final minute of the match Taylor broke in alone on Delaware freshman
goalie Chris Jones (Sykesville,MD/Century), who got a piece of the ball but was
unable to keep it from going into the net.
Jones made two saves in his collegiate debut for the Blue Hens.
After being out-shot, 9-3, in the first half, the Hens came within inches of
taking the lead midway through the second half. Sophomore forward Sobhan
Tadjalli’s (Hockessein, DE/A.I. DuPont) free kick eluded Villanova goalkeeper
Jason Friel, but hit a post before being cleared away by Villanova defenders.
Friel made three saves to post the shutout.
Villanova outshot the Hens, 17-8, on the afternoon and held a 4-2 edge in
corner kicks.
Delaware will return to action on Wednesday with a road match against Central
Connecticut State University. Game time in New Britain, Connecticut will be 3
