NEWARK, DE -- George Mason scored the lone goal of the game at 72:06 and Eric Barnes made six saves in leading the Patriots over the University of Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer match Friday night at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The game’s only goal came when George Mason’s Hugh Fike crossed the ball through the middle of the box from the right side with Dan Ames waitiing on the left. Ames fired a shot past Delaware keeper Chris Jones to give the Patriots (5-5-4, 1-2-4 CAA) the lead and ultimately the win.
The Blue Hens (1-10-3, 0-6-1 CAA) had several good chances to tie the game after the goal. With just over 14 minutes remaining, Sobhan Tadjalli’s shot aimed inside the left post was stopped on a diving save by Eric Barnes. Just over three minutes later, Barnes made a similar save on Eric Shadoff. With only 17 seconds remaining in the game, Barnes made his final save with a stop on a mid-range shot by Bill Paugh.
Delaware outshot the Patriots 9-6 for the game but were unable to beat Barnes. He made six saves to post his fifth shutout of the season. Jones made two saves for Delaware, who suffered their sixth consecutive loss. The game was George Mason’s first win since a 1-0 win over Penn State on September 24.
The Blue Hens will return to action on Sunday when they host Towson to close out the 2005 home schedule. Game time at Delaware Mini-Stadium is 1 p.m.
