NEWARK, DE-- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team lost a hard-fought match with George Washington, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in its home opener at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Colonials (2-0-1) scored late in the first half and withstood a furious rally by the Hens (0-2-1) before adding a late goal to seal the game.
George Washington carried the play throughout much of the first half, outshooting the Hens, 11-2. The Colonials finally capitalized 39:48 into the half when Arturo Pedroso put home a rebound off of a shot by Jon Allen. Delaware goalie Chris Jones made a lunging save on Allen, but was unable to stop the rebound from Pedroso.
In the second half the Hens fought back, attacking the Colonials throughout much of the second half. Delaware had several chances in front of the Colonial net but was unable to get the best of George Washington goalkeeper Derek Biss, who made three saves on the day to post his second shutout in three games this season. Chris Jones and Taylor Thames each played a half in the Blue Hen goal, making three saves each.
George Washington put the game away with only 41 seconds remaining when Andre Chapman scooped up a cleared ball near midfield and raced in alone to score the Colonials second goal.
Several of the Hens’ best chances came off the foot of Sobhan Tadjalli. Tadjalli led the Hens with four shots and caused havoc on the offensive end throughout the afternoon.
Delaware will return to action on Friday when the Blue Hens host St. Mary’s (CA) at 1 p.m. at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
