Emmitsburg, MD -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team lost a tough
road match at Mount St. Mary’s, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Howdy Long scored both goals for the Mountaineers, notching one in each half.
The first one came nearly halfway through the first half, when Long beat
Delaware goalkeeper Chris Jones on a penalty kick to give the Mountaineers the
lead. Only six minutes into the second half, Long struck again by putting home
a header from the left side of the box. In addition to his two goals, Long led all
players with five shots in the game.
Mountaineers goalkeeper Mark Murphy posted three saves for the shutout, while
Jones made three saves for the Blue Hens. The teams tied with 13 shots apiece
for the game, with Delaware mounting a late rush by posting 10 shots in the
second half.
The Blue Hens return to action Wednesday when they travel to Navy at 7 p.m.
match with the Midshipmen.
