Delaware Men's Soccer Gets First Win With 1-0 Victory Over Navy

DATE: September 21, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, MD-- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2005 season with a 1-0 win over Navy on Wednesday night. Sophomore Sobhan Tadjalli notched his first goal of the season 61:15 into the match to give the Hens a lead they would not relinquish.

Tadjalli, last year’s Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year, took a pass from T.C. Young, forced Navy goalkeeper Aric McElheny out of the net, and chipped the shot into the left corner of the net for the goal. Tadjalli was the only Delaware player to register more than one shot with two, but made this one count for the only goal of the game. McElheny made four saves for the Midshipmen.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Thames made five saves for the Hens in posting his second shutout of the season to record his first collegiate win.

The Midshipmen almost took the lead 28 minutes into the contest when Navy’s McKenzie Plank hit the post followed five seconds later when teammate Anthony Parker hit the crossbar with a shot. Navy outshot the Hens 10-9 in the contest, but were unable to beat Thames.

The Blue Hens will return to action next Tuesday when they host Rider at Delaware Mini-Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
