NEWARK, DE -- The third-ranked Old Dominion Monarchs scored the only goal of the evening 24:31 into the match to defeat the University of Delaware, 1-0, in a rain-soaked match at Delaware Mini-Stadium Friday evening.
The Monarchs (8-1-1, 3-0 CAA) took the lead when Trevor Banks scored off a cross feed from Ross MacKenzie from the right side. Banks, charging in on the left side, redirected the pass past Delaware goalie Chris Jones for his fourth goal of the season.
The Blue Hens (1-6-3, 0-2-1 CAA) almost struck back nearly five minutes later. With just over 13:00 left in the first half, Justin Romano headed a shot that nailed the crossbar before deflecting away harmlessly. The Monarchs finished the game with a 15-6 advantage in shots with Brian Cvilikas and MacKenzie leading the way with four each.
Delaware received an excellent effort in goal from Jones, a freshman from Sykesville, MD. Jones made six saves in keeping the Hens close throughout the contest. ODU’s John Connelly made three saves in posting his sixth shutout of the season and fifth in a row.
The Hens’ scoreless streak was extended to 408:45.
Delaware will return to action on Sunday when they host the College of William & Mary Tribe at 1 p.m.
