Rider Downs Delaware Men's Soccer 1-0 On Goal By Jones

DATE: September 27, 2005

NEWARK, DE -- The Rider University Broncs downed the Delaware men’s soccer team 1-0 in a physical match at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Tuesday night.

Rider junior Tim Jones headed home a shot off of a corner kick by Evan Lubcher with only 2:23 left in the first half to give the Broncs the only goal of the evening. The ball appeared to have been kept out of the net by a Delaware defender, but the officials determined the ball to have already crossed the goalline.

The Hens (1-4-2) received an excellent effort in net from freshman Chris Jones, who made five saves in keeping the Hens within striking distance throughout the game. His counterpart for Rider, Daniel Riverso, also played an outstanding game, making five saves for the shutout.

From the very beginning, the game was an intense, physical battle with neither team willing to give an inch. After the Broncs (1-5-2) took the lead near the end of the first half, the Hens outshot Rider 9-4 in the second half but were unable to solve Riverso. Delaware’s best chance came with less than five minutes remaining in the match when Matt Laudeman’s shot sailed past Riverso and just wide of the far post. Laudeman, Anthony Talarico, Sobhan Tadjalli and TC Young each had three shots for the Hens.

The Blue Hens will return to action on Friday when they host Northeastern at Delaware Mini-Stadium in the conference opener for both teams. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
