NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team scored two first half goals on its way to a 3-3 Colonial Athletic Association tie against Towson in an offensive show at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Hens (1-10-4, 0-6-2 CAA) came out of the gate fast, scoring the game’s first goal 13:03 into the match. Drew Majerick’s shot of a restart sailed straight into the left corner of the net past several startled Towson defenders. The goal was Majerick’s first of the season.
Less than 10 minutes later the Hens took a two goal lead when Justin Arpan put home a rebound out of a scrum inside the box. Arapn, playing in the last home game of his career, tallied his first goal of the season.
The Hens held the lead at halftime despite being outshot 8-4. Towson (9-4-2, 3-3-2 CAA) came out strong in the second half, cutting into the Delaware lead only 1:14 into the half. Angus Burke took a long feed from Nino Mangione in the center of the field and beat Delaware goalie Taylor Thames from 12 yards out. Only five minutes later, the Tigers tied the game when Sebastian Haensel scored off of a cross pass from Pat Healey. Healey put the Tigers in the lead only 13 minutes after that, when he headed a loose ball into the net out of a scrum.
But the Tigers lead would not last. Less than three minutes after taking their only lead of the afternoon, Delaware’s Anthony Talarico scored his third goal of the season on a rush up the right side. Drew Majerick assisted on the goal to earn his first career three-point game.
The rest of regulation and the two overtimes saw the two teams trade chances on the offensive end. The best chance for either team in overtime came with 2:30 left in the second overtime when Talarico’s blast from the box was stopped by Towson goalie Zak Thompson. Thompson made three saves for Towson, while Thames and Chris Jones split goaltending duties for the Hens, making four saves between them.
Prior to the game, the Blue Hens honored seniors Sal Tadjalli and Justin Arpan, each playing in their final home game.
The Blue Hens will return to action on Friday when they travel to UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. match with the Seahawks.
