William and Mary Scores Early, Holds Off Late Delaware Rally For 1-0 Win

DATE: October 9, 2005

NEWARK, DE -- The College of William and Mary scored the only goal of the game only 4:57 into the match in defeating the University of Delaware men’s soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Freshman Brock Jones scored on a rebound of a Doug Ernst shot off of a corner kick. Delaware goalkeeper Taylor Thames made an lunging save on Ernst, but the opportunistic Jones put home the rebound.

The rest of the first half remained a stalemate, with neither team able to break through the defensive efforts of its opponent.

In the second half William and Mary (4-5-1, 2-2-1 CAA) almost took a two-goal lead multiple times. With 22 minutes remaining, William and Mary’s Jarrett Thomas took a pass from Brendan McCurdy and raced in alone on goal. Thomas made a move to elude Thames, but his shot hit the left post and trickled along the goal line before it was cleared by Delaware’s Matt Haney. Later, with only 32 seconds remaining, Thames made a breakaway save on Ernst to keep the game within reach.

Delaware’s best opportunity to score came with four minutes remaining, when T.C. Young’s header off a corner kick sailed just over the cross bar. Tribe goalkeeper Kris Rake made four saves in posting the shutout, while Thames made five saves for the Hens.

With the shutout, Delaware’s scoreless streak is extended to 498:45.

Delaware (1-7-3, 0-3-1 CAA) will return to action on Friday when they travel to Richmond to take on Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
