DATE: August 27,. 2006

Athlete photoTOWSON, MD -- Senior Tal Blau and junior Sobhan Tadjalli (at right) each scored goals and the University of Delaware matched last year’s win total for the entire season with a 2-0 men’s soccer victory over Adelphi in the second round of the Towson University Kickkoff Tournament Sunday at the Towson Center Field.

The Blue Hens, playing under first-year head coach Ian Hennessy, improved to 2-0 with the victory following a 3-2 win over Loyola in the first round of the tournament Friday. Delaware is now off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 1995 season and the two victories already match the team’s entire win output of a year ago when the squad went 2-12-4.

Delaware picked up the victory despite being outshot 13-11 by Adelphi (0-2), which lost its opener to Towson Friday evening. The Hens held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Thames (Georgetown Prep/Olney, MD) posted three saves to pick up his fifth career shutout.

The Blue Hens got all the offense they would need just 11 minutes and 39 seconds into the contest when Blau (Wagner/Staten Island, NY) took a pass from sophomore Bill Paugh (Lancaster Catholic/Parkesburg, PA) and headed in a shot from 10 yards out past Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley. The goal was Blau’s second career tally and his first since the 2004 season.

Neither team scored again until the closing minutes when the Hens got some insurance when Tadjalli (A.I. duPont/Hockessin, DE) scored his second goal in two games as he beat Hurley on a breakaway following an assist from Matt Laudeman (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE). Tadjalli now has scored 15 career goals, placing him in 13th place all-time at Delaware.

The Blue Hens will be looking for their first 3-0 start since 1985 when they host Villanova in their home opener Sept. 5 at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
