NEWARK, DE -- Sobhan Tadjalli scored 5:21 into the game and Taylor Thames made four saves to keep the University of Delaware men's soccer team unbeaten with a 1-1 tie against Navy on Tuesday night in head coach Ian Hennessy's home debut.
The Hens (2-0-2) are unbeaten after four games for the first time since 1978. Hennessy is also the first coach in Delaware men’s soccer history to go unbeaten in his first four games as head coach.
Delaware took the lead only 5:21 into the game. Tadjalli (right) finished off a pretty play set up by one touch passes from Matt Laudeman to Michael Zoellner to Tadjalli, who beat Midshipmen goalkeeper Evan Barnes for the goal. The goal marked the second straight season Tadjalli scored the Hens only goal against Navy.
Delaware carried play through much of the first half, but Navy (3-3-1) tied the game when leading scorer McKenzie Plank beat Thames just over seven minutes into the second half.
Both teams had golden opportunities to win the game in the waning moments of regulation and overtime. With 4:30 remaining in the second half, Thames made a diving save to his right to stop a header by Navy’s Eric Gorden. Not to be outdone, Barnes stoned Laudeman’s rocket from 15 yards out less than two minutes into the first overtime.
The Hens held a 13-11 advantage in shots and also led in corner kicks 6-2. Freshman Paul Danaher led Delaware with four shots.
The Blue Hens will return to action on Tuesday when they host Villanova at 7 p.m. The game is a make-up date for the game originally scheduled for September 5th that was postponed due to inclement weather.
