PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Anthony Bafile scored just 1:11 after the opening whistle to propel Drexel to a 3-0 shutout of Delaware on Thursday in the Blue Hens' final game of the season.
Bafile put the Dragons ahead before Delaware could settle in defensively. With just 71 seconds elapsed, Chris Schieve knocked a bouncing pass into the box and Bafile beat UD keeper Taylor Thames to the loose ball. The sophomore midfielder made Thames pay, burying the ball into the right side of the net to give Drexel (11-4-3, 8-2-1) a 1-0 edge.
Pat McCaffery doubled the Dragon advantage at 17:39, when he scored from 18 yards out after a Bafile corner kick. Drexel, which controlled the action from start to finish, added a 76th-minute goal from Todd Wampler to put the game out of reach and secure a tie for the CAA regular-season title.
The Dragons out-shot Delaware (3-13-2, 3-7-1 CAA), 22-10, and collected five corner kicks to the Hens' three. Forward Fabio Assumpcao led the Dragon charge with six shots, while junior midfielder Paul Danaher took a team-high three shots for UD.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Thames did his best to keep Delaware in the match, as he made a season-high nine saves.
The Blue Hens fell to 16-35-5 in the all-time series with their longtime rival. Drexel has won 15 of 18 meetings since 1990.
The Hens were held scoreless for the 11th time this year and finished the season with nine goals, tied for the fewest by a Blue Hen team since 1957.
Freshmen midfielder Demar Stephenson led the young Hens with six points (two goals, two assists) on the year, while Danaher added two goals of his own. The future is bright for Ian Hennessy's squad, which graduates just four seniors this season.
