ATLANTA, GA -- Midfielders Demar Stephenson and Paul Danaher (right) scored second-half goals eight minutes apart to give the Blue Hen men's soccer team a much-needed 2-0 victory at Georgia State on Sunday afternoon, a win that keeps Delaware in contention for a spot in the CAA tournament.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Blue Hens (2-10-1, 2-4-0 CAA) blast seven shots, Stephenson put UD ahead to stay at the 49:33 mark. When senior striker Sobhan Tadjalli's shot deflected off of GSU keeper Filipe Carvalho, Stephenson gathered the rebound in the box and punched it into the net for his second goal of the year, the eventual game-winner.
Danaher needed just 7:51 to add an insurance goal - his first score of the year - and give the Hens their first two-goal outing of the season.
Delaware snapped a three-game losing streak and a 357:51 scoring drought in the win, scoring twice as many goals today as they had so far this month. UD head coach Ian Hennessy, whose Hens defeated Georgia State for the third consecutive year, was elated with the breakthrough.
"It was great to get a win on the road today," Hennessy said. "We had a good performance from the group with Demar, Paul, Ben (Rodkey) and EJ (Alvarado) doing particularly well in midfield. They are a happy and relieved group at this point since this win has been coming for so long. Again today, there were long stretches of quality soccer, except we were able to reward ourselves with a win on two excellent goals."
The Blue Hens out-shot GSU 16-9, as Rodkey, Danaher, Tadjalli, and junior forward Tolu Olowolafe tallied three shots apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Thames made five saves for the Hens en route to his second shutout win of the season.
Delaware's win could prove crucial in its quest to qualify for the conference tournament, as the Hens moved into a three-way tie with Hofstra and VCU for the eighth and final berth.
Hennessy's Hens return to the field on Friday night, when they host Northeastern at 7 p.m.
