HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Despite a 25th-minute goal from sophomore midfielder Paul Danaher - his second score in three matches - the Delaware men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss at Hofstra on Sunday afternoon.
Danaher opened the scorebook at 24:39, settling a cross from freshman midfielder Ben Rodkey and beating Hofstra goalkeeper Tom Johansen from 15 yards out. The Blue Hens maintained that lead until intermission, but gave up the game-tying goal to the Pride's Johannes Grahn just three minutes into the second half.
Both teams had several chances to win it late in regulation, but neither side could find the net until Hofstra's Justin Flood broke through with 44 seconds left in the first overtime. After UD keeper Jon Curry-Edwards punched out a corner kick by Joseph Amendolare, Flood gathered the loose ball on the edge of the box and fired in the game-winner, giving the Pride (5-8-2, 4-4-0 CAA) their second consecutive victory.
Hofstra enjoyed an 18-10 advantage in shots and earned five corner kicks to UD's one, controlling the flow of play throughout. Flood led the Pride with four shots, while Danaher notched four shots for the Hens, who fell to 2-11-2 overall and 2-5-1 in conference play.
The Pride posted their 11th consecutive CAA home win, while Delaware fell to Hofstra for the third year in a row.
Second-year head coach Ian Hennessy was frustrated with the Blue Hens' loss.
"It was tough to drop this one in OT," Hennessy said. "We did not do enough to deserve the win, but in the end I am disappointed that we at least didn't get a tie."
In his first game of the season, Curry-Edwards collected three saves in relief of Taylor Thames, who left the pitch after just 12 minutes.
The Hens return to action on Friday, when they host Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
