RALEIGH, NC -- The University of Delaware men's soccer team continued its Atlantic Coast Conference tour with a 1-0 setback at North Carolina State on Sunday afternoon.
The Hens fought toe-to-toe with N.C. State until Wolfpack midfielder Jorge Mora beat Delaware goalie Taylor Thames (right) on a free kick in the 84th minute.
In the game's waning moments, Thames came out of the goal box to collect a ball intended for Wolfpack striker Ben Ward. N.C. State was awarded a free kick from 19 yards out, and Mora bent it around the Delaware wall and into the back of the net.
Thames made five saves for the Hens, who fell to 0-6 all-time against ACC teams. N.C. State outshot Delaware 11-10, but UD held a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Junior forward Tolu Olowolafe led the Hens with three shots, while sophomore midfielder Paul Danaher and junior forward Matt Laudeman added two each.
"It was the best soccer I have seen a Delaware team play since I began my tenure," said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. "Today I felt the game betrayed us a little because we were so dominant. It was heartbreaking to go down to the late goal. The players were magnificent, and I know they will grow from this."
Delaware returns to the field Thursday, when the Hens visit Lehigh at 7 p.m. Boxscore
