RICHMOND, VA -- University of Delaware freshman midfielder Demar Stephenson (right), who scored the game-winning goal in the Blue Hens' 1-0 triumph at James Madison on Sunday, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.
Stephenson's 15-yard blast in the 71st minute gave the Hens (1-7-1, 1-1 CAA) their first win of the season and helped the team build momentum as it enters a crucial week of league play.
The goal was the first of Stephenson's young career and came on his first shot of the season. It also snapped a 371-minute Blue Hen scoring drought that dated back to Sept. 15.
A native of Marlboro, MD, Stephenson has played in seven matches for the Blue Hens, making four starts. He is the first Delaware player to earn Rookie of the Week honors since midfielder Paul Danaher was selected on Sept. 26 of last year.
Towson midfielder Pat Healey and Drexel midfielder Carlos Ruthner shared CAA Player of the Week honors.
