WILMINGTON, NC -- Caito Helland and Allen Lomax each scored first half goals to lead the UNC Wilmington men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association action Friday night.
The Seahawks, who snapped a seven-match losing streak, improved to 2-9-1 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Delaware, which is now 0-6 all-time against UNC Wilmington, fell to 1-10-1 overall and is also 1-4 in league play.
UNCW opened the scoring 14:01 into the contest when Caito Helland scored off assists from Will Friesinger and Allen Lomax. The Seahawks added an insurance goal at the 27:21 mark as Lomax took a chip from Daniel Roberts and beat Blue Hen goalkeeper Taylor Thames.
UNC Wilmington goalkeeper Brock Duckworth made the lead stand up, as he recorded four saves to post the shutout. Thames made six saves in the Blue Hen goal.
Delaware, which got three shots from freshman Ben Rodkey (at right), was out-shot, 10-5, for the match. The Seahawks also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
"We missed a penalty kick to tie, and that summed up our game tonight," said second year head coach Ian Hennessy. "Some quality chances again fell our way but our inability to score and put teams away has been very frustrating. In the end I also tip my hat to UNC for a job well done."
The Blue Hens, who have now dropped three straight matches, return to action on Sunday when Delaware travels to Georgia State for a 1 p.m. match with the Panthers.
