RICHMOND, VA -- Mattijs Maruanaya scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Virginia Commonwealth men’s soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Delaware Friday night in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
The Rams improved to 5-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAA, while the Blue Hens dropped their second straight match to fall to 0-7-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Virginia Commonwealth, which improved to 6-0 all-time against Delaware, struck first in the 27th minute when Maruanaya stole the ball from a Blue Hen defender and beat UD goalkeeper Taylor Thames (at right). The Rams added a goal just 1:05 before halftime when Forsan Asad-Radwan scored off a pass from Evan Slusser to make it 2-0.
VCU’s Sven Meusch made it a three-goal game with 27:23 remaining when he scored off feeds from Pat Viray and Maruanaya, and just 2:23 later Viray collected a corner kick from Maruanaya and found the back of the net to give the Rams a 4-0 lead. Jorit Loehr closed the scoring by heading home a Otavio De Luca corner kick from five yards out with 5:33 left.
Thames made five saves in goal for Delaware, which is now winless through its first eight matches for the first time since 1994. Andrew Dykstra stopped one shot in 66 minutes in the VCU goal, while Stefan Beyer did not make a save in the final 24 minutes.
