PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware men’s soccer team came back to tie the score against Drexel three separate times Wednesday night in Philadelphia as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
This was both teams’ third tie of the season as Delaware is now 1-7-3 (0-2-1) and Drexel is 3-4-3 (1-1-1).
Freshman Andrew Englehart (at right) scored the second and third goals for the “Fightin’ Blue Hens,” who did just that - fight, to send the game to two overtimes where neither team scored. Although Delaware never led and the game ended in a tie, this was the highest scoring output for Delaware all season.
“Terrific heart displayed by the lads,” Head Coach Ian Hennessy said. “I am happy that we came away on the road with a point, but thought we deserved better.”
Drexel’s Anthony Bafile scored an unassisted goal nearly 11 minutes into the game after beating two defenders and chipping the ball past Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak.
Sophomore E.J. Alvarado would respond for Delaware with his first goal of the season on a header off a throw in by Bill Paugh just before halftime. Delaware would head to the locker room tied 1-1.
Heading into this game, Delaware had been outscored by its opponents in the second half 10-5, but they were not to be outscored in this second half.
Drexel’s Leland Raum settled a pass from Pat McCaffery and fired a shot from 18 yards past Rusnak to put the Dragons up 2-1 a little over a minute into the second half.
But Englehart scored the first of his two goals on the night a little more than halfway into the second half to tie the score again at 2-2. He was assisted by freshman Blair Hammond.
Near the 80-minute mark, Mike Crosse scored what figured to be the game-winner for Drexel when he received a pass from Anthony Bafile and beat two defenders on the right side to score and put the Dragons up 3-2.
A little more than six minutes later, Englehart would score his second goal of the night off an assist from senior Taylor Thames with just four minutes left in regulation.
The Blue Hens outshot the Dragons 6-4 in the two overtime periods (24-19 on the game), but could not find the net for a game-winner.
