ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Delaware men’s soccer team ended the season on a sour note as Colonial Athletic Association foe Georgia State defeated the Blue Hens 5-0 on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, Delaware stayed tied with its win total from last year at three, finishing with a record of 3-13-3, 2-8-1 CAA. Georgia State improved to 6-8-4 and 2-6-3 CAA.

The Blue Hens were shutout for the eighth time this season and meanwhile, had no answer for the Panthers’ offensive onslaught. Eduardo Liza started the scoring for Georgia State on an unassisted goal at almost 13 minutes into the game and Linus Warendh scored with a little under seven minutes before halftime to put the Panthers up 2-0 at the break.

The Panthers’ offensive attack did not cease as Dathan Knott scored two consecutive goals at 60:21 and 68:14. Jacob Hamilton added a fifth goal for the Panthers for good measure at 84:27.

Georgia State outshot Delaware 27-12. Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak made seven saves and senior Taylor Thames (at right) took a team-leading three shots in the losing effort.

According to head coach Ian Hennessy it has been a difficult year for the Blue Hens who had long since been eliminated from playoff contention.

“With the loss of so many players so early in the season, we were always faced with an uphill task. However, for the most part I was happy with the energy the players brought for the season. Today was a little different...” he explained. “I am not sure that we wanted to be here [in Atlanta] today as our last game of the season. Being out of the playoffs, I think the motivation to travel was difficult mentally for some. I give full credit to GSU who played well today and were deserved winners.”
