NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men’s soccer team won its second game of the year against George Mason Wednesday night at Delaware Mini Stadium. Courtney Hewitt (at right) scored what proved to be the game-winner as Delaware hung on 2-1.

With the win, Delaware improved to 2-8-3, 1-2-1 and George Mason fell to 6-5-1, 2-3-0.

The Patriots outshot the Hens 10-6 and took 11 corner kicks to UD’s two, but Head Coach Ian Hennessy said on this night, luck was on Delaware’s side.

“[This was a] great victory for the program tonight. I think the game was better played by a very talented Mason team on the whole, but we’ve been in spots where we’ve been the better team and lost. Sometimes you need rub of the green and hard work to get things done,” Hennessy said.

Delaware got on the board in the fourth minute when Andy Streilein scored his third goal of the year off a rebound. The Hens played conservatively the rest of the way, only managaing four shots in the first half and six for the game.

Hewitt would score his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute when he received a pass from Paul Danaher, sneaked the ball around Patriot goalkeeper Sean Kelley who was down on the ground, and put it in an empty net.

Hewitt’s goal turned out to be the gamewinner as Mason’s Lucas Pardew scored off a rebound after Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak deflected Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe’s shot to bring the Patriots within a goal in the 72nd minute.

Rusnak and the Blue Hen defense hung on the rest of the way and Delaware got its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season to stay in the hunt for the six-team playoff.
