NEWARK, Del.– The University of Delaware men’s soccer team played Marist College to a 2-2 tie on Monday night in the Blue Hens’ home opener at Delaware Mini Stadium.
Marist's Lucas Szabo, who scored both of Marist’s goals on the night, knotted the score at two goals apiece with 24 minutes left in the regulation, and neither team could score in the rest of regulation or in the two 10-minute overtime periods.
Both of Delaware’s games have gone into two overtime periods, with last Friday’s match resulting in a 2-1 loss at Rutgers. Head Coach Ian Hennessy would have liked his Blue Hens to get their first win, but said he’s seen improvement from last year’s 3-13-2 team during the team’s first two games.
“The fact that we’re going to overtimes is a step in the right direction, because last year these games would have been losses in regulation,” Hennessy said.
The Red Foxes were the first to strike when Szabo scored the first of his two goals in the 11th minute of play. Szabo hit in a rebound inside the box after a Conrad Rusnak save to put Marist on the board.
Delaware responded at the 24:33 mark when junior midfielder Darren Christie headed in a cross by freshman defender Andy Streilein. The goal was Christie’s second on the season, and it tied the score at one.
The Blue Hens would take a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Jon Scheer (at right) almost six minutes into the second half. The goal was his first of the season.
Marist (0-1-1) would get another goal from Szabo with 24 minutes left to tie it at two, and that’s how the game would stand.
In the second overtime period, Szabo almost scored his third goal of the game on a shot from about 10 yards out, but Rusnak slapped the ball over the top of the goal to keep the Blue Hens alive.
Delaware (0-1-1) will travel to the Bronx, N.Y. on Friday to take on Fordham at 7 p.m.
