PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Josh Carroll scored 42 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Rutgers University men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over the University of Delaware in both teams’ season openers Friday night at Yurcak Field.

Carroll’s free kick from midfield bounced over the head of Blue Hen sophomore goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak and into the net to give the Scarlet Knights the dramatic victory.

The Blue Hens opened the scoring 13:55 into the contest when junior Darren Christie (at right) recorded his first career goal by scoring off a pass from junior Paul Danaher.

"To lose tonight in two overtimes was heartbreaking, against one of the nation's most respected programs," said Delaware third-year head coach Ian Hennessy. "However, it was night and day from last year's performance and definitely something to build on for this year."

Delaware maintained its one-goal lead until the 49th minute, when the Scarlet Knights’ Ibrahim Kamara scored the tying goal. Gaetano Panuccio took a feed from Dilly Duka and headed a ball off the crossbar, but Kamara drove home the rebound to knot the match at 1-1.

Neither team could find the back of the net over the final 30 minutes of regulation and the first overtime period, but Carroll’s goal early in the second extra session gave Rutgers the victory.

Rusnak made seven saves in the Blue Hen goal, while Amir Haghshenas stopped two shots for the Scarlet Knights. Christie and Abdul Faisal Alhassan-Chibsah each notched two shots for Delaware, while Danaher and Courtney Hewitt added one apiece.

Rutgers held a commanding 26-6 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Delaware plays its 2008 home opener on Monday when the Blue Hens host Marist at 7 p.m. at the UD Mini-Stadium.
