NEWARK, Del.– The University of Delaware men’s soccer team failed to keep a one-goal lead two separate times on Tuesday night and fell to Saint Joseph’s 3-2 in overtime at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
“I thought [our] players did more than enough tonight to win, but I give full credit to Saint Joseph’s for hanging in there until the end,” Head Coach Ian Hennessy said.
Junior midfielder Paul Danaher (at right) struck first with an unassisted goal from six yards out near the end of the first half.
Saint Joseph’s would answer with a goal by Colin Baker off of a cross by Giacomo Dilisi early in the second half and tie it 1-1.
Darren Christie then responded with his team-leading, third goal of the season off of a Danaher assist and put the Hens back up 2-1.
But the Hawks came right back with a goal ten minutes later by Sean Canavan, who put in a rebound after a Conrad Rusnak save and knotted the score at two.
Christie had two goals disallowed in the final 20 minutes of regulation. The first was called back because he was offsides and the second he was called for a handball. Neither team scored in the rest of regulation and the game went into overtime.
In just under five minutes of play in the overtime period, Saint Joseph’s Dilisi scored the game-winning goal. The final score was 3-2.
With the win, Saint Joseph’s (1-0-1) ties the all-time series between the two schools at 10-10-2.
Delaware (0-2-1), which out-shot SJU 17-9 on the night and had 14 corners to the Hawks’ one, has led in three of its four games this year, but have yet to earn its first win in 2008.
