JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The University of Delaware men’s soccer team suffered its third overtime loss of the season Tuesday afternoon at Saint Peter’s by a score of 2-1.
Dmitri Pelts scored the game-winner for the Peacocks just nine seconds into the first overtime period, and sent head coach Ian Hennessy and and his Blue Hen squad home with another tough loss.
“We did enough to win again today, but gave up two unacceptable goals again,” Hennessy said. “We changed the system around, and for the most part it went well, but it cannot compensate fully for our choices at times. This is the fourth time we have been to overtime and have no wins to show for it. It is a frustrating time for us all.”
Saint Peter’s (3-3-2) jumped out to an early lead on a goal from Gamal Breedy a little over eight minutes into regulation. Delaware out-shot Saint Peter’s 8-5 in the first half (13-10 for the game), but went into halftime down a goal.
Blue Hen sophomore forward Andrew Englehart (at right) would then put in a rebound for his first goal of the season to tie the game at one apiece as the game approached the 70-minute mark, and it would eventually go to overtime where Pelts scored the game-winner just nine seconds in.
Delaware (1-6-2, 0-1 CAA) is 0-3-1 in overtime games this year, and four of the Hens’ six losses have come by just one goal.
The Hens next take the field at James Madison on Sat. night, 7 p.m., in a Colonial Athletic Association match.
