NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s soccer teams and coaching staffs will host the 3rd annual soccer clinic for Special Olympics Delaware athletes and coaches on Saturday, Sept. 5 on the soccer practice fields behind the Bob Carpenter.

Men’s head coach Ian Hennessy and women’s head coach Scott Grzenda will join their coaching staffs and players to provide instruction and activities for Special Olympics soccer coaches and players.

Soccer is one of Special Olympics Delaware’s most popular fall sports. Their season starts in late August and runs through October with events all over the state. The events involve players participating at all skill levels and include individual skills competitions, as well as traditional and unified team tournaments.

According to Hennessy, he and his staff have a great working relationship with Mark Wise, the Director of Sports Training and Volunteer Management at the University of Delaware. Hennessy said he and Wise are next door neighbors in the Carpenter Sports Building, and they are always exchanging ideas and equipment.

“[Special Olympics Delaware] are a terrific group of people, and my staff and I are always more than happy to help with anything they ask for assistance with. Our athletes, like the Special Olympic athletes, share a common bond and a love of sports, and they enjoy each other’s company whenever we are fortunate enough to cross paths,” Hennessy said.

Grzenda added that he and his coaching staff and players look forward to hosting the Special Olympics soccer clinic for the third year.

“We are excited to give back to the community and to contribute to the lives of these extraordinary athletes,” Grzenda said.
