NEWARK, Del. – Courtney Hewitt (at right) gave the University of Delaware men’s soccer team a 1-0 lead almost halfway through the first half, but the Colonial Athletic Association’s top team, UNC Wilmington, scored two unanswered goals to win at Delaware Mini Stadium Sunday morning, 2-1.

The game had been scheduled for Saturday night at 7 p.m., but the field was flooded and deemed unsafe to play on. Therefore, the game was played Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

The Blue Hens caught the league-leading Seahawks sleeping early as Hewitt scored his second goal of the year off a cross by Darren Christie a little over 20 minutes into the game. John Scheer was also credited with an assist on the play.

That goal woke the Seahawks up though, as they responded less than a minute later with a goal by Nassim Berhouni off an Albert Alwang corner kick.

UNCW took control of the game in the second half, out-shooting Delaware 10-6 (17-10 for the game), and it finally got the gamewinner when Devan Carroll scored inside the box off a cross by Christian Davidson with 8:31 left in regulation.

Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak made five saves in the losing effort, including two diving stops.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy said he was glad to have some of his players back from injury and was encouraged by the way they played today.

“We’re very disappointed to lose to the league-leaders,” said Hennessy. “This was a tight game that could have gone either way. However, it was nice to have Scott [Wark], Paul [Danaher] and Blair [Hammond] return today. They made a good impression and hopefully are injury-free for the rest of the season."

The Blue Hens are back in action on Wed. at 7 p.m. as they take on CAA foe Northeastern in Boston.
