NEWARK, Del. – Freshman forward Andy Streilein (at right) scored a little over three minutes into the overtime period to give the University of Delaware men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over conference foe Virginia Commonwealth University on senior day Sat. night. This was the first time the Blue Hens beat VCU in seven all-time meetings.
Delaware seniors Taylor Thames, Bill Paugh, Steve Cavalier and Eric Shadoff were honored before the game with their parents, and they walked off the field at Delaware Mini Stadium for the last time victorious.
Delaware (3-12-3, 2-7-1 CAA) was outshot 19-12, but the Blue Hens had plenty of scoring chances throughout the game. Forwards Darren Christie and Andrew Englehart led the Hens with three shots apiece.
Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak had a very busy night, making 10 saves to record his first shutout of the season. Rusnak was put to the test and made a few diving saves near the end of regulation to send it to overtime.
Just a little over three minutes into the overtime, Demar Stephenson sent a corner kick into the box, the ball was deflected off a VCU defender and Streilein was at the right place at the right time to put it in and give the Hens their second conference win over VCU who is still in the CAA playoff chase.
“[I’m] really thrilled for our seniors tonight to win against a very talented VCU team,” he said. “It was a nice way for our young squad to send them on to graduation on a positive note with our first [program] win against VCU.”
