WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary’s Alan Koger stunned visiting Delaware by scoring a hat trick in the first 21:22 of the game and the Tribe went on to win 3-1 on Saturday night.

With the loss, Delaware fell to 2-9-3, 1-4-1 and William & Mary improved to 7-4-2, 3-3.

Koger scored the first of his three first-half goals near the six-minute mark when he headed in a free kick by Doug McBride to put the Tribe up 1-0 early.

Not seven minutes later, Koger added his second goal of the night. Price Thomas and Roger Bothe were credited with the assists.

Koger would add a third goal at 21:22. Jeremy Harris sent a cross from the right wing, and Koger coralled it after a deflection and shot it past Blue Hen goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak to complete the hat trick. The three goals were his third, fourth and fifth of the season.

But Delaware, fresh off its first conference win of the season Wednesday night against George Mason, did not quit in the second half. Just after the 75-minute mark, Darren Christie (at right) scored his fourth goal of the year off an assist by Steve Cavalier. Christie received Cavalier’s pass on the right side and then cut to the center and finished to the left side to beat the Tribe’s goalkeeper Andrew McAdams to bring the Hens within two goals.

That would be all the offense Delaware could muster despite outshooting the Tribe 15 to 13.

“This was a very dissapointing loss tonight. Unfortunately, we seem to have a knack this season for gifting teams goals. Three fairly routine early shots should not yield two goals. It is proving frustrating for all involved, and it is a shame since we play very good soccer at times and forced eight savs from their keeper to our two saves. But that is the beauty of the game, which sometimes yields odd outcomes,” said Hennessy.

The Hens play host to Towson on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Including the Towson game, they have five games back, and Hennessy hopes his squad can bounce back from this loss.

“Hopefully we can get some healthy bodies back on the field soon to finish strongly,” said Hennessy.
