WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Senior midfielder Darren Christie was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team announced by the conference office Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Championship hosted by UNC Wilmington.
Christie (at right), a third team All-CAA honoree a year ago, tallied nine goals and a pair of assists to lead the Hens to finish tied for eighth in the league. The Huntsville, Ala. native helped Delaware to a 7-12 season, the most wins since the Blue Hens’ 2001 team, under direction of head coach Marc Samonisky, went 7-11-1 while in the American East Conference. Four of Christy’s team-high nine goals served as game winners.
Following a freshman season at Alabama A&M, Christie recorded a total of four goals and four assists during his sophomore and junior seasons at UD.
"I am truly delighted for Darren that he was named to the first team squad," said fourth-year head coach Ian Hennessy. "Darren was one of my first recruits at UD and when he is committed to playing, he is one of the most exciting players in the country. I hope his award serves as notice to MLS clubs that he is held in high regard by the coaching staff of the CAA schools."
William and Mary senior forward Andrew Hoxie, who led the CAA in goals, assists and points this season, was selected as the 2009 CAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches.
Other top individual awards went to Hofstra senior back Richard Martinez, who was chosen as the CAA Defender of the Year, Northeastern freshman forward Don Anding, who was named CAA Rookie of the Year, and UNCW head coach Aidan Heaney, who was selected as CAA Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
