CAPE COD, Mass. -- University of Delaware senior men’s soccer standout, midfielder Darren Christie, has been named an Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Second Team All-Star selection.
Christie’s (at right) All-Region selection is one of 38 in program history and serves as the first since Brad Philips was recognized on the Second Team in 1996.
"Darren will be with D.C. United this weekend and I am sure that he will be thrilled with the recognition," said fourth-year head coach Ian Hennessy. "Between Darren and Kyle Davis, who was named an Academic All-American, it has been quite the senior class. I am delighted for the both of them that they received these respective honors.
"They [Christie and Davis] both represent a culture that I continue to try and build here at this great school. They are ideal representatives for our program."
Christie was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team announced by the conference office on November 12. A third team All-CAA honoree a year ago, Christie tallied nine goals and a pair of assists to lead the Hens to finish tied for eighth in the league. The Huntsville, Ala. native helped Delaware to a 7-12 season, the most wins since the Blue Hens’ 2001 team, under direction of head coach Marc Samonisky, went 7-11-1 while in the American East Conference. Four of Christy’s team-high nine goals served as game winners. Most recently, Christie was invited to train with D.C. United of Major League Soccer in December.
Following a freshman season at Alabama A&M, Christie recorded a total of four goals and four assists during his sophomore and junior seasons at UD.
The 2009 ECAC Division I men’s soccer Offensive Player of the Year earns this title after accumulating 43 points during the 2009 season. University of Maryland Baltimore County junior midfielder, Levi Houapeu, tallied 15 goals, 13 assists and three gamewinning goals for the Retrievers this season. While leading UMBC to a 14-6 record, Houapeu was also named America East Midfielder of the Year.
Daniel Bostock of Monmouth University receives the honor of 2009 ECAC Division I Defensive Player of the Year. The senior back has started 54 consecutive matches, helping MU capture 13 shutouts this season. Bostsock has helped the MU defensive unit lead the nation in goals against average with 0.33 per game and rank second in the nation in team save percentage (.891).
Earning the ECAC Division I Rookie of the Year honor is Dominic Reinold from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Reinold scored 12 goals for the Knights this season, including three gamewinners. During his freshman campaign, he tallied four assists and 28 points.
Joining Houapea, and Bostock on the First Team are Andrew Bulls (UMBC), Issa Tall (Adelphi), Andrew Hoxie (William & Mary), Andre Ankpan (Harvard), CJ Sapong (James Madison), Daniel Keat (Dartmouth), Josh Walburn (Princeton), Zach Loyd (UNC), and Phillip Nelson (Lafayette).
Christie and Reinold are joined by Darren Amoo (Liberty), Jamie Darvill (Loyola, Md.), Connor O’Brien (Bucknell), Michael Seamon (Villanova), Ryan Clark (Monmouth), Kwaku Nyamekye (Harvard), Tennant McVea (Loyola, Md.), Andrew Wenger (Duke), and Zac McMath (Maryland) in garnering Second Team recognition.
The ECAC is the nation’s largest athletic and the only multi-divisional conference with approximately 300 Divisions I, II, and III colleges and universities from Maine to North Carolina and westerly to Illinois. Established in 1938, the ECAC, a non-profit service organization, sponsors nearly 100 championships in 37 men’s and women’s sports, assigns more than 4,400 officials in 12 sports, administers nine affiliate sports organizations and six playing leagues and recognizes more than 2,000 student-athletes through the public relations arm of the conference. The ECAC serves as the primary conference for select members in the sports of men’s and women’s ice hockey, and men’s lacrosse.
