TOWSON, Md. -- University of Delaware senior Kyle Davis, a defender on the men’s soccer team, was named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Team on Wednesday. Davis (at right), a second-team selection, becomes Delaware’s first men’s soccer Academic All-American since Matt Haney, who now serves as an assistant coach at Delaware, was honored on the first team in the 2006 season.

A native of Hockessin, Del., Davis maintains a 3.86 grade point average in biochemistry while minoring in German. Davis started each of the Blue Hens’ 19 games this season and added two assist to help Delaware to a eighth place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Delaware finished the 2009 season 7-12 overall. The seven wins are the most since the Blue Hens’ 2001 team, under direction of head coach Marc Samonisky, went 7-11-1 while in the American East Conference.

Davis garnered ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District 2 All-Academic first team honors in 2008 and 2009, and was a second-team selection in 2007. Davis was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll in 2007 and 2008, while following his junior season he was awarded the UD Team Sportsmanship Award and the ECAC Medal of Merit Award.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, maintain a 3.30 or better cumulative GPA and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team.
