PHILADELPHIA -- University of Delaware junior Courtney Hewitt netted two goals to lead the Blue Hens to a 2-0 victory over host Saint Joseph’s University (Pa.) at Finnesey Field on Thursday evening.

Delaware (2-5-0) outshot Saint Joseph’s (0-8-0), 14-9, en route to its second 2-0 shutout this season, the first coming against Navy on Sept. 6 when senior Darren Christie tallied a pair of goals.

In a series that began in the 1959 season with a 3-2 loss to the Hawks, the Blue Hens entered the contest seeking revenge after dropping a late 3-2, overtime loss to the Philadelphia squad a year ago at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Hens did just that. The Blue and Gold found justice at 29:59 when Hewitt (at right) connected with a high cross from junior co-captain Jon Scheer. Hewitt headed the ball into the upper left-hand corner of goal to give Delaware a 1-0 advantage entering the half.

The visitors returned to the field and dominated play during the second stint of action. Delaware laced off nine shots in the latter 45 minutes, while Saint Joseph’s managed only five. One of the nine again came from the boot of the junior, Bowie, Md. native.

In the 61st minute, Hewitt went one-on-one with Hawks’ keeper Andrew D’Ottavi, and chipped a shot high of his reach to secure the Hens’ second of the game.

"The lads were terrific tonight.” applauded fourth-year head coach Ian Hennessy. “They came away with a well-deserved victory on the road in a tough environment. We have a good core of players that are very committed to the program and it was really nice to see them rewarded with another victory this evening.

“We will now look on this positive to push ahead into conference play against a regionally ranked opponent, ODU,” concluded Hennessy.

Delaware will next travel to Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 25 for a 7 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association match. The Hens will kick-off their conference schedule against the Monarchs who received votes in the Sept. 22 National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll.
