ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Delaware men’s soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to the University of Maryland Baltimore County during the opening game of Navy’s Anders Soccer Classic at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Friday evening.

Junior Courtney Hewitt scored Delaware’s (0-2-0 overall) sole goal in the 78th minute of play, but it was too late for the Fightin’ Blue Hens as the Retrievers had already notched five goals to secure the win.

Entering the game coming off a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech on Sept. 1, UMBC (2-0-0) netted the first goal of the game in the 15th minute before scoring the eventual game-winner in the 31st minute to lead, 2-0, at the half.

Despite merely outshooting the Blue Hens 20-15, the Retrievers continued to dominate in the second stint of play, scoring three consecutive goals before the Blue Hens found the back of the net.

At 77:35 freshman Ethan Gordon sent Hewitt a ball from the left slot. Hewitt tallied his third career goal as he connected with the feed to beat the opposing goalkeeper to the left corner of the goal and finalize all scoring.

"Today’s game was not as lopsided as the score shows,” stated fourth-year head coach Ian Hennessy. “UMBC had 10 shots on goal and scored five which is remarkable. I credit UMBC for this.

“For our part we will learn that the game provides many opportunities and if you cannot capitalize on them you will often suffer the consequences. Given the amount of work we did today, I am very proud of those who made the commitment for all 90 minutes and never gave up," Hennessy concluded.

Junior co-captain Conrad Rusnak registered five saves in goal for the Hens, while two Retriever keepers combined to make four saves.

The Blue Hens will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 6 at Navy’s Anders Soccer Classic when they take on host Navy at 3:30 p.m.
