Delaware vs. UMBC Sept. 2, 1998 at 3:30 p.m. L 1-2
The University of Delaware men's soccer team
lost its first contest of the season on Wednesday,
falling to UMBC 2-1. The loss started off Delaware
at 0-1, while giving the Retrievers of UMBC a win
in their opening match of the season. Delaware
scored the first goal of the game when senior
tri-captain Lakieben Brown sent a cross to
sophomore Jeremy Groff, who netted his first
career goal with 35:03 left in the first half to
put Delaware up 1-0. UMBC struck back when Delaware
had an own goal with 24:45 left in the first half.
The only other scoring came in the second half when
sophomore Ryan Cuomo one- touched a pass from the
18-yard line to a streaking Ryan Lampton who scored
the game winning goal. The Blue Hens outshot UMBC
10-5 but neither team really never mounted pressure
in the attack zone.
