Blue Hens Capture Fourth Straight Team Title; Maday Takes Three Events; Troskey Sets Diving Mark

 

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men won their unprecedented fourth straight team title and the Northeastern women won their first team crown since 1993 at the third and final day of the America East Swimming and Diving Championships Sunday at the University of Delaware's Rawstrom Pool.

The Delaware men, led by Tom Maday's three first place finishes for the meet, earned 734 points to outdistance runner-up Drexel with 681.5. New Hampshire, led by Outstanding Male Swimmer Brian Lucey who won six events during the meet, was third with 536.5 points followed by Boston University (517), Towson (506), Maine (236), and Vermont (154).

The Northeastern women, led by four first place finishes from Miriam Seul, edged crosstown rival Boston University for the other team title with 707 points. The Terriers, who matched the Huskies' six wins for the meet, had 628 points to finish second. Towson was third with 554 points followed by Delaware (466), New Hampshire (455), Drexel (332), Maine (234), and Vermont (129).

Delaware's John Hayman was named men's Coach of the Year; Northeastern's Roy Coates was named women's Coach of the Year; Lucey was named men's Outstanding Swimmer; Drexel's Mike Savicky, who won the three-meter and was second in the one-meter, was named men's Outstanding Diver; Maine's Krystal Fogler, who won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events with America East record times, was named the women's Outstanding Swimmer; and Drexel's Bridget Mitchell, who won the one-meter and was second in the three-meter, was selected women's Outstanding Diver.

Maday (Great Mills/Lexington, MD) won three events during the meet to up his career America East titles to eight, matching the school record for individual league titles held by Lee Martin in 1985-89. He swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events for the third straight year and also captured the 200 individual medley.

Also for the Delaware men Sunday, Mike Gallaher (Peabody/West Peabody, MA) was second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:07.87), Ian Miller (Dover, Pa. HS) was third in the 100 freestyle (47.62), Luke Schenck (Cathedral Prep/Edinboro, PA) was third in the 1,650 freestyle (16:09.04), Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.86), David Troskey (William Penn HS) was fourth in the three-meter dive with a school record total of 520.40; Jim Reichart (Emmaus, Pa. HS) was fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:26.13), Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS) was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:40.18), Brian Aston (Cheshire, CT HS) was sixth in the three-meter dive (511.00), Brian McGillen (St. Mark's HS) was seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:00.68), Rich Schellenberger (Hempfield/Manheim, PA) was seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:00.53), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Schenck, Gallaher, Scott Muety (St. Charles, Ill., HS), and Miller was fifth (3:14.65).

Leading the Delaware women on Sunday were Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's HS) who was fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:33.83), Lisa Dillinger (Pallotti/Crofton, MD) was fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:10.11), Christine Johannsen (Dayton Regional/Springfield, NJ) was fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:11.51), Sara Dyson (Liberty/Bethlehem, PA) was fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.72), Jenna Blongiewicz was ninth in the 200 backstroke in a school record time of 2:07.90, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Kathryn Fryer (Severna Park, Md. HS), Blongiewicz, Amanda Stouffer (O.J. Roberts/Spring City, PA), and Haus placed sixth (3:40.92).

In the men's meet, New Hampshire won seven titles while Boston University captured five and Drexel won four. For the women, Boston University and Northeastern each won six events with defending champion New Hampshire capturing four first place finishes.

New Hampshire's Lucey had a part in six Wildcat victories, including sweeping the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle events for the second straight year. Other multiple individual winners were Delaware's Maday (100 & 200 breaststroke; 200 IM), and Boston University's Dave Rozado (500 & 1,650 freestyle) and Jeff Graves (100 & 200 butterfly).

Seul won four events on the women's side for Northeastern (50, 100, and 200 freestyle; 400 freestyle relay) while New Hampshire's Kristen LaTourelle won the 200 and 400 IM, and Maine's Fogler won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events.

Sunday's winners on the men's side were Maday in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.90), Towson's Nik Haynes in the 200 backstroke (1:53.72), Boston University's Rozado in the 1,650 freestyle (16:06.17), New Hampshire's Lucey in the 100 freestyle (46.42), Boston University's Graves in the 200 butterfly (1:54.05), Drexel's Savicky in the three-meter dive (America East and pool record 579.55 points), and Boston University's 400 freestyle relay team (3:09.30).

Sunday's winners for the women were Boston University's Ingrid Salazra in the 1,650 freestyle (17:27.55), Boston U.'s Karissa Lopez in the 200 butterfly (2:06.02), Maine's Fogler in the 200 backstroke (America East record 2:05.07), New Hampshire's Kristen Zeimetz in the 200 breaststroke (pool record 2:18.05), Northeastern's Seul in the 100 freestyle (52.97), and Northeastern's 400 freestyle relay team (pool record 3:31.17).
