Weisser Wins Two
Events But Hens Fall to Drexel
PHILADELPHIA -- Freshman Meghan
Petry won three events and broke her own school record
in the 1,000 freestyle for the second straight week to lead
the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team
to a 149-85 victory over host Drexel Saturday afternoon at
the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
In the men's meet, Drexel (2-3) won nine
first place finishes to post a 152-89 victory over the
University of Delaware men (2-3), who lost their third
straight meet.
Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ)
captured three events for the second straight meet as she
won the 1,000 freestyle in a school record time of 10:23.20
(beating her record by .77), captured the 500 freestyle
(5:07.83), and won the 200 butterfly (2:10.37). The Delaware
women improved to 2-3 on the season by snapping a two-meet
losing streak with the win over Drexel (0-5).
Other winners for the UD women were
freshman Jillian Fitzgerald (Archbishop
Wood/Warminster, PA) who won the 50 freestyle (25.97),
junior Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, Mass. HS) won the
200 backstroke (2:13.16), sophomore Megan Rodgers
(Lower Merion/Ardmore, PA) won the one-meter dive (206.17),
freshman Rebecca Caldwell (McCaskey/Lancaster, PA)
captured the 200 breaststroke (2:32.06), and the 400
freestyle relay team of Sara Cierski (Emmaus, Pa.
HS), Denise Duncheskie (Gwynedd Mercy/Oreland, PA),
Erin Colbert (Newark HS), and Jennifer Haus
(St. Mark's HS) won in a time of 3:45.07. Haus also
placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.70) and 100
freestyle (55.64) events.
In the men's race, Drexel used nine first
place finishes to knock off the four-time defending America
East champion Blue Hens. Drexel has placed second each of
the last four years. Matt Coogan won two diving events for
the Dragons.
Leading the Delaware men were sophomore
Kevin Weisser (Franklin/Murraysville, PA) who won
both the 500 freestyle (4:50.17) and the 1,000 freestyle
(10.01.26) events. Also winning for the Hens were Mike
Gallaher (Peabody/West Peabody, MA) in the 200 freestyle
(1:45.24) and Rick Dressel (McKean HS) in the 200
butterfly (2:01.29). Delaware's Bryan Kahner
(Jericho, NY HS) took second place in both the 500 freestyle
(4:51.32) and 1,000 freestyle (10:07.61) to pace the
Hens.
