Wasiewski, Kahner Win, But Blue Hens Place Second
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women and the Lehigh University men dominated the action at the University of Delaware Swimming and Diving Invitational Saturday at the Rawstrom Natatorium. The Delaware women, led by freshman Meghan Petry and junior Kathryn Fryer who each won six first place finishes, earned 1,312 points to outdistance Lehigh (1,257) and Stony Brook in the three-team meet. In the men's section, Lehigh won all but three races and earned 1,379 points, downing host Delaware (994) and Stony Brook (555). Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) continued her outstanding freshman campaign as she won six races, capturing the 1,650 freestyle (17:10.05 - less than one second off the UD record), 400 medley relay (4:05.51), 500 freestyle (5:04.59), 800 freestyle relay (7:58.53), 400 individual medley (4:38.66 - two seconds off school record), and the 400 freestyle relay (3:42.04). Fryer (Severna Park, MD HS) won the 200 medley relay (1:52.45), 400 medley relay (4:05.51), 200 butterfly (2:12.64), 800 freestyle relay (7:58.53), 100 butterfly (59.52), and 400 freestyle relay (3:42.04). Junior Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's HS) won five events in the 400 medley relay, 800 freestyle relay, 100 freestyle (54.79), 200 freestyle (1:58.29), and 400 freestyle relay. Also for Delaware, freshman Jill Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) won three events in the 200 medley relay (1:52.45), 400 freestyle relay, and 50 freestyle (245.44), and freshman Rebecca Caldwell (McCaskey/Lancaster, PA) won three events in the 400 medley relay, 100 breaststroke (1:09.67), and 200 breaststroke (2:30.98). For Lehigh, Nicole Schock won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, Caitlin Fiedler won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events, and the 200 freestyle relay took first place. For Stony Brook, Kristi Schubert was second in the 1-meter dive and Erin Byrnes was second in the 3-meter dive. In the men's race, Lehigh dominated the action behind sophomore Bing Padmadankha who captured six first place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 800 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle, and the 400 freestyle relay. Also for the Mountain Hawks, Steve Turoscy swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and Bryan Dunker won the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 100 butterfly, and 200 individual medley. The Blue Hen men won just two events as Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) captured the 200 breaststroke (2:14.08) and Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS) won the 400 individual medley (4:20.35). Also for Delaware, Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant HS) was second in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events while Mike Gallaher (West Peabody/Peabody, MA) was second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.43) and third in 100 freestyle (49.55). Wasiewski also placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:03.78. Stony Brook's Igor Voloshin won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.78. AGATE: Final Men's Team Standings: 1. Lehigh - 1,379; 2.
